Astronomy Photographer of the Year: Huge plasma arc wins

A photo of a huge plasma arc next to the Andromeda Galaxy has won this year's prestigious photography prize. A team of amateur astronomers led by Marcel Drechsler, Xavier Strottner and Yann Sainty captured the surprising discovery. Scientists are now investigating the newly discovered giant cloud of gas. It could be the largest such structure in the nearby environment in the Universe. Judge and astrophotographer László Francsics said the image was as spectacular as it was valuable.

"It not only presents Andromeda in a new way, but also raises the quality of astrophotography to a higher level," he said. The Royal Observatory Greenwich in London, which runs the Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition, also awarded two 14-year-old boys from China the Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year prize.

Runwei Xu and Binyu Wang collaborated to capture this image of The Running Chicken Nebula, IC 2944, which is located in the constellation of Centaurus, 6,000 light years away from the Earth Embedded in the nebula's glowing gas, the star cluster Collinder 249 is visible. Yuri Beletsky, judge and professional astronomer, described it as a strikingly beautiful picture.

"The photographers have managed to capture the vibrant colours of the nebula as well as the embedded star cluster." The Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year award is for people aged under 16.The judges looked at more than 4,000 entries from around the world. The images are on show in an exhibition at the National Maritime Museum in London from Saturday.

AICTE launches curriculum designed in BTech Electronics VLSI Design & Technology, Diploma in IC manufacturing

To boost India’s semiconductor nation dreams, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has designed a curriculum for BTech Electronics VLSI (very Design & Technology and Diploma in IC manufacturing. A high-paying industry, Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) is the process of creating an integrated circuit (IC) by combining many metal oxide silicon transistors onto a single chip and is immune to automation. Given the increasing interest of nations in semiconductor manufacturing and R&D, the sector is likely to witness a spike in demand for engineers with semiconductor know-how.

The usual starting salaries for a fresher role in a VLSI company can vary from Rs 10 lakhs per annum to Rs 20 lakhs per annum, depending upon the company, with an average annual salary of Rs 14 lakhs per annum. However, the average annual salary in a relevant multinational company for beginners varies between Rs 30 lakh to Rs 80 lakh per annum, as per AICTE.

The AICTE curriculum in B.Tech in Electronics (VLSI Design and Technology) covers an introduction to IC Design & Technology, digital systems labs, semiconductor device fundamentals, analog electronics, introduction to CMOS processing, introduction to VLSI Design, analog IC Design, static timing analysis, fabrication and characterization lab, and physics of electrical engineering materials. On the other hand, the diploma in IC manufacturing will cover an introduction to VLSI Fabrication, semiconductor fab familiarisation, electronic devices and circuits, clean room technologies, semiconductor technology equipment maintenance, allied activities for foundry like safety protocol for foundry, vacuum technology, and within industrial automation it will cover semiconductor packaging and testing, electronics system assembly or product design and renewable energy technologies.

This design detail determines if you trust your news sources

When you’re reading an article online, you’re probably not stopping to consider what font the words are set in. But it’s making a big difference in how you absorb the news.

If you’re on a train and catch a glimpse of a newspaper over someone’s shoulder, chances are you can recognize which publication it is without being able to see the masthead. “The average person can tell you very quickly if an article came from the New York Times or the Dayton Daily News,” says Mario Garcia, senior adviser on news design and an adjunct professor at Columbia Journalism School.

That’s because establishing familiarity through font is part of a publication’s branding. You might not know a newspaper’s typefaces by name, but no matter what words are written, you could tell which publication they belong to. “The role of typography and design, in all of this, is to really remind you that you are in the place you trust,” says Garcia, who also runs a design studio whose clients have included the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. This is why many national publications don’t use standard typefaces such as Times New Roman or Georgia, instead working with a team of designers to create their own.

Typography not only creates familiarity with readers, but it’s also a large part of how publications establish authenticity and trust with their audience. On the surface level, a badly designed or ill-considered site influences how seriously readers view the content. “If you’re interviewing people to work in a law firm and they show up in jeans, they’re telling you they don’t take this job seriously. Type can do the same thing,” renowned type designer Tobias Frere-Jones told Quartz. “It can support the content that’s being delivered, fight against it, or undermine it.”

The Role of Game Design in Teaching Creativity

In today’s rapidly changing world, creativity has become a highly sought-after skill. As traditional jobs are being automated, employers are increasingly looking for individuals who can think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions to complex problems. This shift in the job market has led to a growing recognition of the importance of fostering creativity in education. One way to do this is through game design.

Game design is a multidisciplinary field that combines elements of art, technology, and storytelling. It involves creating interactive experiences that engage players and challenge them to think creatively. By incorporating game design into the classroom, educators can provide students with a unique opportunity to develop their creative thinking skills.

One of the key benefits of game design in education is that it encourages students to take risks and explore new ideas. In traditional educational settings, students are often taught to follow a set of rules and guidelines. While this approach may be effective in teaching certain subjects, it can stifle creativity. Game design, on the other hand, encourages students to think outside the box and experiment with different solutions. This not only helps them develop their creative thinking skills but also fosters a sense of curiosity and exploration.

Furthermore, game design provides students with a platform to express their ideas and perspectives. In traditional classrooms, students are often passive recipients of information. They are rarely given the opportunity to actively participate in the learning process. Game design, however, allows students to become active creators and designers. They can use their creativity to design characters, create storylines, and develop gameplay mechanics. This hands-on approach not only enhances their understanding of the subject matter but also empowers them to take ownership of their learning.
