What skills and basics should a graphic designer know

At its core, this discipline is about communication, which means your role is to translate a message or an idea into a visual form. At a basic level, this can be as simple as selecting a font that is readable or putting information into easily digestible chunks. But the deeper you go, the more you will come to understand how different audiences connect and respond to your work, and the best ways to shape your design to suit their needs.

This is an iterative and non-linear process where designers work through phases to understand and synthesise user needs, to ideate, prototype and test a design solution. Not limited to graphic design, this process is used every day by start-ups, big enterprises and professionals around the world. Mastering the skill of design thinking can help you uncover original and innovative solutions and will stand you apart in the design world.

Generating ideas is exciting, confronting, confounding and extraordinarily satisfying. It will keep you up at night, stop you mid-sentence and send you off in directions you never expected. From the initial seed of an idea, through to the ‘a-ha’ or ‘eureka’ moment, you are on a creative rollercoaster, making your way through essential processes, practices and stages until you reach the end result

Ideation is a process of synthesis. Like a funnel, it’s wide at one end to admit everything you can think of. Then, as you move through the process, that funnel narrows down in focus to ensure that your final result is innovative and creative while also corresponding to the initial brief.

Video game design class embodies spirit of collaboration

A software engineer and 15-year veteran in the gaming industry, Lewis shares his knowledge with Denison students as a mentor and guest speaker in Professor Ashwin Lall’s popular Game Design course.

“I’m a little jealous that a class like this wasn’t around when I was at Denison,” said Lewis, a dual major in computer science and physics who works for Crystal Dynamics, a California-based video game developer.

It’s not just because students learn the technology that powers a video game industry that generates more than $180 billion in revenue annually. In fact, producing the next generation of game designers isn’t the primary objective of Lall’s class.

The associate professor and Computer Science chair teaches lessons that extend beyond the realm of gaming — lessons that students can apply to any job or field of study While students in Lall’s class learn the rudimentary skills of game design, they’re also expected to work in groups, collaborate with others outside the computer programming bubble, and engage in the delicate art of constructive criticism. “This class mirrors the world of game design and programming,” said Lewis, the software engineer. “There’s tons of cross-disciplinary work in it. Teamwork is essential.”

Top 7 graphic design trends 2023: Overview, ideas and cases

What makes a good design? An effective graphic design helps users understand your message, and also enables smooth navigation on your website or store.

An effective design also has a secret component that makes messages memorable and strengthens emotional connections between a customer and brand. This component is the shared emotional and ideological context between you and your audience; that’s why trend-watching is critical for designers.

In order to boost the performance of your projects in 2023, Depositphotos has collected and explained the major graphic design trends that will dominate this year.

In 2023, the world is not likely to become a more pleasant place for humanity, as environmental, economic, and political crises continue to intensify. Nevertheless, both consumers and creators will find comfortable spaces for themselves, where they can relax and temporarily forget about their current issues. These two tendencies were revealed in the 2023 Creative Trends Report by Depositphotos. This time, the research team went further and translated them into a more practical language — graphic design.

The seven graphic trends presented below can be divided into two categories: “escapist” and “brave”. The first group includes anime-style visuals, iridescent futuristic textures, and mysticism. Military-style packaging, clothing, and posters, as well as sans serif typefaces are examples of the second category.

5 Benefits of Using Infographics on a Web Design

Infographic search traffic has surged by almost 800%—that's right, 800%—since 2012. Infographics are not only visually beautiful and entertaining to view but also effective marketing tools.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that infographics combine the creative elements of visuals with the actual relationship to data. Images, analogies, and colourful illustrations let what would usually be dry statistics leap off the page and come to life. Here are eight advantages of infographics and why you should pay attention to them.

1. They're Eye-Catching, and Convincing

Information is praised by people, particularly statistics, numbers, and figures. Infographics are ideal for presenting facts attractively and convincingly. Your audience will not only appreciate the immaculate presentation of your material, but they will also find it more believable and fascinating

2. They Demonstrate Your Expertise

Most of us find statistics impressive, but combining them with pictures makes a perfect match. When you offer expertise through an infographic, you establish yourself as the authority and strengthen your company's reputation. The readers will value your newly acquired information and see you as the authority the next time the topic arises.

3. They Increase the Number of Website Visitors

If your infographic is attractive and engaging, it will inevitably increase your custom website’s traffic. Today, individuals are more willing to share visual material, so every "click" or "share" increases the number of people who see your content.

4. They're Simple to Read, Understand, and Recall

What good is unique content if people quickly forget what they've read after leaving a page? Visuals are one of the finest methods to convey information to the reader since they are processed 60,000 times quicker than text, and 65 percent of people learn visually.

5. They Work Well for SEO

Web development experts say visual material is far more "share-worthy" than conventional word information, as was previously established. Because of how infographics naturally compel users to click, like, and share them, Google will index your website higher due to the "Page Rank" algorithm. In other words, not only are people more likely to share your infographic, but Google will also likely view it as more shareable and rank your page higher.

Motion Graphics Freelancing Tips from We Wander

We recently sat down with motion designer and freelancer Owen Chikazawa, also known as We Wander, to find out some of the in’s and out’s of becoming a successful motion graphic freelancer. Here’s what he had to say.

First off, you don’t have to jump in with both feet. Owen says his freelance career started slow, “I got started freelancing by doing a few jobs here and there with friends in my free time. That work continued to grow and my desire for more freedom did as well.”

Many artists don’t realize that they can take on a few extra jobs during the evenings or weekends in order to build a strong client base and a portfolio of work. At the same time, it’s important to make sure that if you are an employee of another company, that you don’t have any sort of non-compete clause that would prevent you from freelance work. Every situation is different, but in many cases, a little extra weekend work is a great start.

After Owen put in his time as a weekend warrior for a while he says, “At a certain point I felt like I had enough saved to take the plunge into the world of freelance and I haven’t looked back.” One thing that is important when jumping into the freelance pool full time is making sure that you have enough money to keep you going through lean times. A common mistake is feeling like you will always be busy and not being financially prepared for downturns.

Owen explains his biggest reason for making the shift this way, “I enjoy connecting with people, and being a freelancer you get to do that a lot more than being on staff at one place.” This is great information because freelancing is about connecting with people as much as doing great work. It’s also about wearing many hats and being comfortable doing so.

Hilarious graphic design feedback meme is painfully real

Ah, feedback. It's the source of most graphic design memes, and dreaded by every artist at every level. Which probably explains why Design Twitter is currently going wild for an image depicting notes on a famous Milton Glaser artwork.

Design legend Glaser created the iconic, psychedelic Bob Dylan poster in 1966 to promote the musician's upcoming Greatest Hits album. It now lives in the Museum of Modern Art – but apparently that doesn't mean it's immune from inane client feedback. (Looking for more design inspiration? Check out the best print ads of al time.)

From insisting that sponsor logos be added (in the agreed order) to a request for clouds in the background ("Hope, future..."), the feedback will be all too familiar to designers who've dealt with a difficult client(opens in new tab). "This is what I deal with on daily basis," one user comments, while another adds, "Painfully accurate. Loved this poster growing up."

The parody comes from a series by branding agency Graphéine(opens in new tab) imagining clients' feedback on various famous posters. If you're looking for more design laughs, check out the best graphic design memes around.

How Is Math Involved in Designing Video Games?

Some first-person shooter or racing games, have complex and realistic physics known as the game’s engine. In modern games, the math must be complex to give a game an authentic feel. Determining the path of a bullet or the movement of a car over a race track is a purely mathematical exercise. Mapping the mechanics of real-world physics to the game world requires mathematical knowledge and calculation.

Math is also a critical component of video game graphics. A game world and the things inside it are composed of polygons, and designing ways for these polygons to interact with each other is a complex job requiring lots of math. Geometry is particularly important for this reason as knowledge of planes, vectors and angles is essential.

One of the most complex ways in which mathematics is involved with video game design is in probability, as many games are heavily based on chance. Some have gambling type features and need to have complex statistical underpinnings to make them compelling and enjoyable to play. Computer programming is a mathematical enterprise and programming video games increases the need for the creator to have a strong mathematical basis.
