Why TYPEONE magazine is a must-read for graphic designers

TYPEONE magazine isn't just a beautifully designed print publication; it's also full of key insights about the evolving interaction between typography and graphic design. Read on to find out what it's all about.

what a time to be a designer. While the 2020s has certainly been a tumultuous decade, world events have accelerated existing business, technological and cultural trends in a way that's brought design skills into high demand as brands across the globe scramble to adapt, evolve and survive.

Designers everywhere can thrive in this new-new normal – as long as they stay relevant. But it can be tricky to keep up with the latest trends and stay on top of everything that's happening. Type is one of those areas where it's especially vital to stay ahead of the curve, as it's now changing at a breakneck pace, thanks to the explosion of type design tools.

It's natural to turn to the web to keep you up-to-date. And there are many blogs and online magazines, including Creative Boom, that can help. But we're the first to admit that will only get you so far.

Why? Firstly, despite this being a digital age, type is still largely a physical medium. From books and newspapers to posters, billboards and signage, typographical designs need to work as much in the analogue world on screens. And that means studying how type works in a physical environment.

Environment Design: How to design a study space for kids in an online school?

In simple words, environment design is organizing your nearby surroundings in a way that you are tricked into doing what you should do, and forget about things you shouldn’t. It’s a two-step process where good habits have to be ‘in your face,’ easy to do, and fun, while the bad habits are extremely hard to access, unrewarding and unsatisfying. For the learning environment, visual cues that serve as reminders to study or perform school-related tasks should be incorporated into the environment designs, while limiting or removing distractions that may disrupt online school hours.

Environment Design: How to design a study space for kids in an online school?

The digital age has no dearth of distractions. For kids in online schools, access to the internet also means exposure to social media, Netflix, and other distractions. But parents can block all these distractions and curate a student-friendly screen experience. A practical example of this approach: Go into your child’s device and open Screen Time Settings. There, you can set a certain downtime, which allows you to block all other applications except ones you approve, to ensure the child pays all attention to online school. Similarly, you can set daily limits for app categories as well as communication limits during screen time.

Here’s why: Our brain loves association. It’s making connections and triggers to different cues without your permission, all the time. Think of how if you went to the washroom right now and sat on the toilet seat, you would end up peeing after a few minutes even if you hadn’t intended to. That’s because to your mind, sitting on the toilet seat equals urination. Similarly, if you reserve a certain space in your home for your child to use only when they are in an online school, and nothing else, his/her brain will start associating that table or chair, or area of the house, with studying.

Design dealers set the tone at Tefaf New York

“Tefaf New York is quite different than Tefaf Maastricht,” says the furniture dealer Stephane Danant of the French design gallery Demisch Danant. His stand has shown at both editions of the fair since 2015 and he serves on the selection committee for design galleries at the Dutch edition. “At the New York fair, because we are limited, it’s about about having a nice display on the floor and the walls,” he says.

The average stand size of 60 square metres enjoyed by the 270 galleries at Tefaf Maastricht is double that for this year’s New York fair, which is in the historical Park Avenue Armory. The 90 galleries at Tefaf New York (11-16 May) have around 30 sq. m of space each on average. This is especially challenging for the fair’s 15 design-focused galleries, whose directors have to deliberate about every square inch as furniture and objects—as opposed to two-dimensional art on walls—fill the space much faster. “We bring the best of the best for the room, whilst most dealers bring the same for the walls,” says British dealer Adrian Sassoon.

The Carpenters Workshop stand at a past edition of Tefaf New York David Benthal

“In Maastricht, you have a bit more room to play with, while in New York, every gallery has to bring their best,” says Will Korner, Tefaf’s head of fairs. “Dealers also usually focus on fewer artists.”

Each team takes a different approach. For Danant, an art fair that values connoisseurship and design is the perfect opportunity to pair his French post-war furniture with historic art on the walls—this year, five large sculptural pieces by the Paris-based American textile artist Sheila Hicks—thereby appealing to a wider range of collectors.

The State Of Graphic Design In Latin America

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. May 8, 2023:

Latin America’s rich and diverse cultural heritage has greatly influenced the development of graphic design in the region. Over the past few decades, Latin America has experienced significant changes in politics, technology, society, culture, and the environment. These changes have had a profound impact on the visual impact of graphic designs.

The political unrest in these regions saw the rise of expression for human rights through the medium of art and graphics. The influence of graphic designs in this region dates back to the rallies in the 1960s and 1970s that led to the emergence of politically motivated graphic design. Designers used their skills to promote social and political change to raise awareness of issues of human rights violations and inequality.

A region’s art and cultural background are the base for future sustainable development, and lately, the governments have realized this. With positive reinforcements from good governance, the businesses in these regions are establishing their voice by advertising through unlimited graphic design outsourcing.

The emergence of digital technology has transformed the way designers create and produce their work. It allows people to take this creativity a notch up resulting in new and innovative designs. Several designers are tapping digital resources to reach a wider audience and showcase their work in line with how the world operates.

Latin American countries believe in expressing themselves through art. The mode of expression through graphic design continues to evolve and thrive, making a significant contribution to the global design industry.

As Latin America is home to some of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems, designers have become increasingly aware of the importance of sustainable design. These changes have inspired designers to create work that is visually stunning, innovative, and deeply rooted in the region’s identity.

Master Plan proposes alignment of tourist infra to save urban city design

Srinagar, Sept 3: As Srinagar witnesses an increase in the number of hotels and guest houses, the Master Plan-2035 envisaged aligning the tourist infrastructure in such a way that the quality of tourist accommodation is not compromised and at the same time, the urban design of the city is saved from getting spoiled.Keeping in view the widespread phenomenon, the Master Plan-2035 has proposed to align the tourist infrastructure by creating tourist clusters and tourist circuits for tourism infrastructure and further integrating the growth of individual hotels or guest houses with road hierarchy, and functional nodes.
Interestingly, as per the comprehensive suitability and potential, new sites have already been identified in different tourism zones for the development of tourist accommodation in the Srinagar Local Area.
As per the plan, the buildings and office complexes which include the Forest Department Building, Sheikh Bagh, Lal chowk, Old Secretariat Complex, District Court Complex Lal Chowk and Veterinary Hospital Maisuma, Old Assembly Hall, Budshah Bridge, Srinagar, Divisional Commissioner/DC’s Office complex, Doordarshan complex, official residence of Chief Justice opposite SK Stadium have been identified for cessation of their existing functions so that they are put to some more subtle and compatible use preferably on PPP mode as provided

Other buildings, as per the plan, which have been planned to be transformed into hotels, include those located along Church Lane, Sonwar and CAPD godowns at Shaheed Gunj.
In addition to the heritage buildings within the core city, the Master Plan also proposes development of a tourist Spine along both banks of river Jhelum from Fateh Kadal to Safakadal and around the Brari Numbal lagoon to act as a gateway to the Old City.

Concerning the promotion and development of the Eco-Tourism, as per the plan, Dachigam Wildlife National Sanctuary, Hokersar wetland, Anchar wetland, Narkara wetland, Haran Forest, and Pampore Lagoons, and Dabsir are potential sites for the development of eco-tourism activities.
“These sites would be the new eco-tourism destinations in Srinagar city, regulated and controlled by the Wildlife and Forest Department. The carrying capacity of these sites shall be scientifically calculated to regulate the tourist flow,” the plan stated, adding that these sites need to be developed using eco-friendly processes without any externalities to the environment and strictly compliant with Eco-Tourism guidelines.

As per the plan, the areas have been earmarked and put to least impact growth for tourist infrastructure by promoting Rural Tourism on environmentally sustainable considerations in areas like Brein, Nishat, Shalimar, and Harwan in the Lake area and abutting the Hokersar and Narkara wetlands.
The projects under rural tourism have been suggested to be taken up on a stand-alone basis or in partnership with other stakeholders by pooling land and other resources to meet the basic minimum requirements as laid down in the by-laws in subsequent sections.
Further, the Flood Absorption Basin [FAB] along the National Highway Bypass, as per the plan, will be developed as Biodiversity Park or Willow Forest (commonly called Veriwaar) and an Urban Lake near Mehjoor Nagar.

The rest of the area from Kakpora to Padshahi Bagh/Mehjoor Nagar on the left side of the river Jhelum, the plan envisaged, will be developed into an Urban Farm rather than existing paddy fields.
“The preservation of this belt is important for the safety of Srinagar city from floods. As such, it is strongly recommended to preserve this area from the onslaught of urban development including even earth filling,” the plan stated.

What Is an Infographic Resume?

If you’re looking for a way to stand out in the job applicant pool and catch the attention of hiring managers, an infographic resume could be what you need. Infographic resumes are a creative way to provide an easy-to-understand visual representation of your qualifications. However, they may not be suitable for every industry or position. Let’s dive deep into the pros and cons of an infographic resume, whether you need it and how to create one to help secure your dream job.

Pros and Cons of Infographic Resumes

Before taking the plunge and creating an infographic resume, consider the pros and cons of this resume format.

Pros

  • Attention-grabbing. Because infographic resumes contain lots of visuals, they’re typically more eye-catching than text-based resumes and can help you stand out from other candidates. Plus, having an attention-grabbing resume can be especially beneficial when applying for positions with a high volume of applicants.
  • Showcases skills. Certified Professional Resume Writer Matthew Warzel says, “An infographic resume can demonstrate your creativity and design skills – which can be particularly useful in industries that value creativity and innovation, such as marketing or design.”

For example, if you’re a graphic designer or UX designer, he recommends creating an infographic resume to supplement your traditional resume and posting it on your LinkedIn profile or emailing it directly to a hiring manager. Doing so shows you’re “willing to take risks and try new things – which can be seen as a positive trait in creative industries.” On the other hand, if you’re applying for positions in more traditional fields like law or finance, it may be safer to stick to conventional text-based resumes.
  • Easy to read. According to research compiled by 3M, visuals are processed 60,000 times faster than text. In other words, visuals often tell a more compelling story and are easier to interpret than written words. By using images and data to illustrate your professional skills, you can highlight key points in a way that’s simple to digest.

Cons

  • Not ATS-friendly. An applicant tracking system is a computer software program that simplifies and speeds up the hiring process. According to JobScan research, 99% of Fortune 500 companies filter resumes using applicant tracking systems like Workday. However, because many of these applicant tracking systems can’t read and properly parse infographic resumes, even if you’re highly qualified, your infographic resume may be automatically rejected by the ATS or get lost in the system.
  • Can be time-consuming to create. While an infographic resume can undoubtedly serve as a visually captivating introduction to your professional background, you may have to invest some time in designing and perfecting it. And while there are many templates online, finding one that represents you professionally and encapsulates your individuality might require some effort.
  • Risk of over-designing. Career coach Amy Feind Reeves cautions against overloading infographic resumes with complex designs. She says, “Some infographic resumes I’ve seen have been so loaded with graphics that they were a chore to interpret.” So, while a visually appealing resume can set you apart from the competition, too many visuals can sometimes hinder your chances of impressing potential employers.

She adds, “Reading a pie chart, a bar chart and a list of bullet points in brightly colored hues to get the basic information I need is a lot of effort. Like any resume, infographic resumes can fail if they do not quickly get across whether your career trajectory indicates you would be a good fit for the role.”
